The Angels weep! Victoria’s Secret announced that its iconic catalog is now a thing of the past. The lingerie company, which has undergone several changes recently, is nixing the monthly book to keep up with the times.
"If we were starting this business today in current context 2016, would you start with one of your major ideas being a catalog, a paper-based catalog, sent through the mail as one of your key — if not your key — marketing activity for a global brand?” finance chief Stuart Burgdoerfer said on an earnings call this week.
The move will save Victoria’s Secret a lot of cash. According to Buzzfeed, Burgdoerfer said that the company spends up to $150 million a year producing the catolog. Years ago, it was a means for consumers to purchase their goods over the phone. But today, most people just head online to do their shopping. In fact, the site’s catalog subscriptions page prompts users to follow Victoria’s Secret on social media and sign up for email alerts.
The news of the catalog’s demise follows the company’s announcement that they won’t be selling swimwear, clothing or accessories anymore, either. "In order to better focus our resources on core merchandise categories, we have decided to eliminate non-core businesses, including swim, in our Victoria’s Secret lingerie business, and shoes, accessories and apparel that were offered in our digital channel but not in stores,” the brand said in a statement to Glamour.
