“You gotta come back!” a mystery voice, presumed to be an NBC staffer, says to Meyers, who is heard replying, “I’ve been gone two weeks.”

“NBC, they want you to come back,” the staffer’s voice demands. “They don’t got no more reruns. They’re out.”

“So I gotta come back?” Meyers asks. “What if I don’t wanna come back? What time is the show on again?”

“12:35,” the staffer replies.

“God, that’s late,” Meyers muses.

Suddenly, the camera pans to a heavily bearded Meyers, mimicking the real-life protagonist featured in the Netflix documentary, Steven Avery.

Netflix released Making a Murderer on December 18. Just two weeks later, two petitions calling for the pardon of the two convicted protagonists — Avery and nephew Brendan Dassey — have garnered more than 122,000 signatures online, based on the events seen in the documentary.

The Netflix hit follows Avery, a man in Wisconsin accused of sexually assaulting and murdering a young photographer in 2005, and his subsequent imprisonment. The documentary, however, reveals that Avery was released from prison in 2003 after being exonerated for sexual assault charges, already having served 18 years in prison.
