Lady Gaga: It’s Like People Are Surprised They Haven’t Already Destroyed Me

Lady Gaga
In a lengthy new interview with The Guardian, Lady Gaga reveals she hid in her house for days after her hip surgery in February 2013, and previews how much work she put into her upcoming album ARTPOP

No one can hold Lady Gaga down. Seven months after canceling her Born This Way Ball world tour to undergo surgery for a broken hip, the 27-year-old pop star is revealing just how dedicated she tried to be for her fans during that time, and how the haters have never brought her down — especially when it came to creating her upcoming album, ARTPOP.

"I hid in my house. I hid a lot…to preserve my image as a superstar to my fans," the singer told the British paper The Guardian after breaking her hip in February 2013. "I don't mean I am a superstar, I mean that [my fans] only ever see me at my best. And it really drove me crazy. So I've really had to make more of an effort to go out more." She continued: "Can you imagine what it's like not to feel real wind? Honestly, I hadn't felt real wind for years! I would be indoors all day and then I'd get in a car in a garage and then drive to another garage and get out and rehearse and then do it again, from country to country, and never walk outside."

Indeed, the "Applause" singer was so worried as to not to disappoint her fans, that she rolled out on stage for a few more shows after getting injured. "I know everyone was thinking I was trying to be a bit silly with my gold wheelchair but I was really trying to keep a bit of strength for my fans because it really upset them and scared them," she added.

The provocative singer has bounced back and doesn't seem to be slowing down since the scary ordeal. She recently opened the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. "I certainly feel that at this time it's almost as if people are surprised they haven't already destroyed me. It gives them a sense of pleasure when they believe that they've destroyed me or taken me down," she said. "It's almost entertainment for people to poke fun at Lady Gaga, but at the very same time they have no idea [what kind of] album I've made. In fact, people have no idea what it really took for me to get here."

ARTPOP — her third studio album — hits shelves November 11.
