Nick Dunne, why so calm? In their first photo as a movie couple, Gone Girl's Ben Affleck and his leading lady Rosamund Pike come together for a chilling cover of the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. The actors get uncomfortably close depicting their characters Nick and Amy Dunne from the adaptation of Gillian Flynn's 2012 best-selling novel.

In the somewhat telling, surprising snapshot, Affleck is seen cradling his onscreen wife, 34, as she looks up to the ceiling — dead. Set in a morgue, the 41-year-old Oscar winner has his left leg placed on her lifeless body while caressing her face and looking — to put it simply, at peace.

As readers of the blockbuster book know, the David Fincher-directed film depicts a husband and wife who have their lives turned upside down once they leave New York City for a new home in the Midwest. On the couple's fifth wedding anniversary, Amy goes missing, and Nick is quickly tagged by the authorities as the prime suspect in her disappearance. (Fincher also shot the EW cover.)

"There was something thrilling about taking this piece of work that I'd spent about two years painstakingly putting together with all its eight million LEGO pieces and take a hammer to it and bash it apart and reassemble it into a movie," Flynn, a former EW writer, told the mag.

Gone Girl hits theaters Oct. 3, 2014.
