It was June 29, 2012, five days before Tom Cruise's 50th birthday, when he got the shocking news: His wife of five years, Katie Holmes, was seeking a divorce, asking for primary legal and physical custody of their 7-year-old daughter, Suri.
Now, exactly a year later, the couple that was once affectionately known as TomKat are enjoying their time … independently.
While Tom, 50, has had a busy year full of movie projects (he starred in Rock of Ages, Oblivion, and Jack Reacher, and signed on for the fifth Mission Impossible film, where he'll reprise the role of Ethan Hunt), he has made time with his little girl. Over the year, he's charted helicopter rides to his friend's house in East Hampton, N.Y. and taken her to Disney World.
The actor has also been spending a lot of time with Connor, 18, his adopted son with second ex wife, Nicole Kidman. Often seen together cheering at sporting events, he's also come out to support his son during his DJ gigs in California.
Holmes, 34, has made a life for herself in New York City — enjoying fro-yo dates with Suri and picking her up at summer camp. Professionally, she also starred in Broadway's Dead Accounts from November 2012 to January 2012 and most recently filmed her latest movie, Mania Days. Despite getting close to (and kissing!) her costar, Luke Kirby, for the cameras, the Ohio native is single — and happy, post-divorce.
"Katie couldn't be happier right now and is in a fantastic place," a source close to the star told Us recently. "She's doing a lot of yoga."
Cruise and Holmes married in Italy in 2006. It was the first marriage for Holmes and the third marriage for Cruise, whose ex-wives include Mimi Rogers and Kidman.
