The statue of Lucille Ball has caused quite a stir!

Lots of ‘splaining to do! An artist named Dave Poulin came forward with a letter of apology this week after his haunting statue of Lucille Ball in Celoron, N.Y. caused quite the ruckus.

The sculptor installed his bronze creation of the beloved comic actress in her hometown, but the statue, intended to celebrate her legendary career, was met with horror and confusion. Locals started a Facebook group to call for the removal of the statue, calling the work of art a “nightmare.”

“I take full responsibility for ‘Scary Lucy,’ though by no means was that my intent or did I wish to disparage in any way the memories of the iconic Lucy image,” Poulin wrote in his letter that was sent to multiple outlets, referencing the nickname the statue earned. “From the day of its installation, I have shared my disappointment in the final outcome and have always believed it to be by far my most unsettling sculpture, not befitting of Lucy’s beauty or my ability as a sculptor.”

“Yes, in retrospect, it should have never been cast in bronze and made public, and I take complete ownership of that poor decision,” the artist continued. “Over the years, I have felt blessed to have inspired and touched the lives of thousands of people who do enjoy my other works, and am heartsick at the feelings that have been evoked as a result of the Celoron Lucy.”

“I will, once again, be making contact with the Village of Celoron and offer to remove the current statue with the promise of creating a new beautiful and charming ‘Lucy’ in its place.”

The creator of the Facebook page responded to Poulin’s remarks on Tuesday, April 7, noting that he or she made the page “almost three years ago” and was surprised by the story’s recently viral nature.

“To be honest, I did it with ‘tongue in cheek’…. it was about 80 percent a joke and 20 percent that I really wanted to see the statue removed… Mr. Poulin has agreed to redo the statue for free,” the creator wrote “In my opinion that is a great gesture, although a little late, but it is still a step in the right direction. A big one.”
