P, A, R, T, Y? Because Ellen DeGeneres remembered it’s the 20th anniversary of Cameron Diaz‘s very first film, The Mask! The actress stopped by the Ellen DeGeneres Show on Thursday, Feb. 13 to promote her Body Book and received an unexpected (and spooky!) surprise.

“Twenty years ago, it was your first, The Mask?” DeGeneres said to Diaz. “What an amazing first experience in film to do that movie with Jim Carrey,” the show host quipped, as the two lounged on her comfy red couches. The Mask was the former model’s first film in 1994 that launched her stardom.

“I can’t believe that I get to still make movies twenty years later,” the 41-year-old actress, dressed in jeans and a dressy top, gushed in response. “I turned 21 on the set of that film and I will never forget it because obviously, you turn 21 and you’re like woo, 21!”

DeGeneres then shifted the conversation to the scary nature of the green mask that brought out Carrey’s alter ego in the box office hit.

“You know what was scariest?” responded Diaz. “The process of taking it off… like just glue and chunks of sponge would stay on his face,” she explained of her costar, meanwhile completely unaware of the figure slowly creeping up from behind.

DeGeneres nonchalantly continued the conversation as a man dressed in The Mask’s trademark cheesy yellow suit and matching top hat snuck onstage to startle Diaz. The actress immediately yelped and toppled over her seat as she bursted out into giggles. “That scared me, I got chills all up and down!” exclaimed Diaz.
