Jacqueline Bisset was stunned into silence by her Golden Globes win on Sunday, Jan. 12. The Dancing on the Edge star quite literally couldn't find the words to express her gratitude when she got up to accept the trophy for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television.
After taking considerable time to make it to the podium, Bisset — a five-time nominee but first-time winner — stood onstage without speaking for several seconds. When she finally did open her mouth to say something, she could hardly form a full sentence.
"God. Um, I think it was 47 years ago that the Hollywood Foreign Press gave me a 'Promising Newcomer'…Thank you very much, Hollywood Foreign Press. You've nominated me about five times," she began. Then, noting her "Scottish background," she said something about wanting to "do something for the Scottish to the front."
Midway through her speech, producers tried to play her off. But Bisset soldiered on, obliviously talking over the music.
"Sorry, I'm going to get this together. I want to thank the people who gave me joy," she said. "My mother, she used to say, 'Go to hell and don't come back.' However, my mother wasn't entirely mean. I believe if you want to look good, you've got to forgive everybody."
"I love my friends and I love my family…You're so kind," she concluded. "Thank you so much."
The 69-year-old Brit earned raves for her performance in Dancing on the Edge, in which she played a wealthy recluse. She beat out Modern Family's Sofia Vergara, Parenthood's Monica Potter, Nashville's Hayden Panettiere, and White Queen's Janet McTeer for the Supporting Actress Golden Globe.
