Both men were convicted murderers who had escaped from the correctional facility earlier this month.

David Sweat was arrested on Sunday, June 28, after being shot twice.

The shooting of Sweat occurred near the town of Constable, N.Y., when Sergeant Jay Cook saw the escaped convict walking toward him and ordered him to stop when the man ran. He shot Sweat twice, once in the shoulder, slowing him down enough to be captured. He was photographed looking bloody and wearing head-to-toe camouflage gear. Two brothers at a graduation party had spotted Sweat and called in a tip.

Sweat and Matt were believed to have been heading toward the Canadian border, following a cabin burglary on Thursday. Two prison workers — Gene Palmer, a guard, and Joyce Mitchell, a seamstress — have been arrested in connection to the escape.
