Matt Damon, like so many of his acting peers, is still trying to come to terms with the tragic death of his friend Philip Seymour Hoffman. During a Reddit AMA on Thursday, Feb. 6, the Monuments Men actor wrote of how close he was to the Oscar winner.
"I mean, pretty close. We worked together a long time ago and I would see him here and there, all over the place," Damon, 43, said. "I'd go to his plays at the Labyrinth and I saw him just last year, we were working on Monuments Men and had dinner with him."
Hoffman helped to found New York's Labyrinth Theater Company in 1992. Shortly after his passing, a fundraiser was organized in his name with proceeds going to Labyrinth; nearly $12,000 has been raised so far.
During his AMA, Damon also revealed the last time he spoke to the late Capote actor, whom he costarred with in 1999's The Talented Mr. Ripley. "The last time I saw him, I took my oldest daughter to The Hunger Games premiere in LA and we had a chat before the movie started. It's just incredibly weird that he's not around anymore," he said of Catching Fire, which debuted last November.
Hoffman played the role of Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee in the second Hunger Games film, and was was set to reprise his role in the final two movies, Mockingjay, Parts 1 and 2. He had seven days left to shoot Part 2 at the time of his passing.
Hoffman was found dead at the age of 46 in his NYC apartment on Feb. 2. A hypodermic needle was found in his arm and authorities discovered 65 bags of heroin. He's survived by his estranged girlfriend Mimi O'Donnell and their three children: Cooper, 10, Tallulah, 7, and Willa, 5.
