U.S. Hockey Player T.J. Oshie Scores the Winning Goal Against Russia in Sochi Olympics

Everyone in Sochi now knows Oshie! U.S. hockey star T.J. Oshie was the talk of the 2014 Winter Olympics after scoring the winning goal against Russia on Feb. 15 and earning the American team a big victory over the host country.

Though the possibility of medals won’t happen until next weekend, Oshie’s impressive win, after an extremely long shootout in a close game, encourages Team USA fans across the globe, some getting up at 7:30 a.m. ET to watch the game.

The major victory was witnessed by Russian president Vladimir Putin, who watched from the stands. The rivalry between Russia and America has been intensified at this year’s Olympics due to Putin’s very public anti-gay stance and regulations regarding the winter games.

Following the team’s win, Oshie became an instant Internet sensation after scoring the majority of the American team’s goals in the final shootout round. Fans took to Twitter, quickly making T.J. Oshie and #USAHockey the top trending topics.
