She continued: "I've always respected Katie for her thoughtful, charismatic approach to journalism. From pivotal coverage of natural disasters and historic elections to the Royal Wedding and the Olympic Games, groundbreaking interview with heads of state and leading tastemakers, her experience is unmatched. Katie is dynamic, savvy, and has a way of connecting with viewers that I really admire."

The veteran journalist, 56, will join a team including Megan Liberman, David Pogue, and Matt Bai, Mayer shared. She'll be the face of Yahoo News and will shoot digital news features for Yahoo's homepage; she'll also continue to host her syndicated daytime talk show, Katie.

Couric has been a special correspondent for ABC News since 2011. Prior to that, she was an anchor for CBS Evening News and a contributing correspondent for 60 Minutes, where she interviewed public figures including Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger (the pilot who landed a plane in the Hudson River) and Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin

Beginning in 1989, Couric was a regular on NBC's Today show; from 1991 to 2006, she served as the series' co-anchor. She was also a contributing anchor to Dateline NBC and the NBC Nightly News. During her decade-plus with the network, she interviewed several presidents (including Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton), as well as J.K. Rowling, Hillary Clinton, and Tony Blair.

"It's very exciting to be a part of a leading company at the intersection of content and technology," Couric said in a press release about her new gig. "I have great admiration for Marissa Mayer and her team and their commitment to bringing news, entertainment, and information to the Yahoo community across multiple platforms. Joining Yahoo offers a tremendous opportunity to reach people all around the world in the way that they're using and consuming media today."
