Olivia Wilde: People Pretend Not to Know I’m Pregnant to Be Polite

Olivia Wilde on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
Jason Sudeikis' gorgeous fiancee Olivia Wilde says people pretend not to know she's pregnant -- plus, she shares a funny story about learning from her mom's pregnancy

It's no secret that Olivia Wilde is pregnant. The star's rep confirmed the news to Us Weekly in October, and Wilde herself has tweeted — on multiple occasions — confirming it to her 1.2 million followers. Nevertheless, she says people still pretend not to know out of some well-intentioned sense of politeness.

"That's the worst thing in the world — when you congratulate a non-pregnant woman on her pregnancy," the Her actress shared during an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on Tuesday, Dec. 17. "I find that people will go to such great lengths to not mention it."

To be fair, Wilde's baby bump is still pretty small. But not so small as to be invisible. "Even when you are clearly — like, I feel like I'm clearly pregnant — people will be like, 'Hey, would you like a glass of whiskey? Would you like to get on this roller coaster?'" she joked. "And I go, 'Oh, well, I'm actually pregnant.' And they go, 'What?!' Unless someone's watching you give birth, I don't think they want to make the wrong call."

Asked if she and fiance Jason Sudeikis are expecting a son or a daughter, the first-time mom-to-be played coy. "It's human," she teased. "We feel good about that."

Boy or girl, the little bundle of joy will be well taken care of, not just by Wilde and Sudeikis but by Wilde's mother. "I have a great mom," the Drinking Buddies star said of Leslie Cockburn, a former producer for 60 Minutes. "She's a good example of how to be a strong badass pregnant lady. But she sets the standards pretty high."

"She went all over the world for 60 Minutes, for ABC News, for Frontline, for years. So, when I'm worrying about like, 'Am I allowed to get on the treadmill?,' my mom is like, 'I was in war zones with you guys,'" Wilde quipped.

"The way most moms tell a cute story about something that happened at, like, a ballet recital, my mom likes to tell the story of when she was eight months pregnant with me, and we were on a plane that had a bomb somewhere in the Middle East," the TRON: Uprising actress explained. "And she's like, 'Remember, you almost didn't arrive because of the bomb?' And then, you know, they landed, they evacuated the plane, there was no bombing. But I'm like, 'That's a terrifying story. Don't share that with our new friends.'"
