Kenny Rogers Announces Retirement After 76 Albums!

Kenny Rogers
Kenny Rogers announced his farewell tour and retirement on Sept. 25.

He knows when to fold ‘em. Country music legend Kenny Rogers announced his retirement during an interview on the Today show on Friday, Sept. 25. After six decades in the business and 76 albums, “The Gambler” crooner, 77, announced that he will do one last worldwide tour before hanging up his cowboy hat and boots.

“I’m going to say goodbye at that point,” Rogers, who has sold more than 120 million albums, told Today co-hosts Savannah Guthrie and Carson Daly. “I’ve done this long enough. I wrote in my book that sometimes there’s a fine line between being driven and being selfish. I really want to be there with my kids and with my wife. They’re very important to me, and I want to see them. That’s my goal.”

One of Rogers’ bucket list items is taking his family, including his wife, Wanda Miller, and their two children (he has three others from previous relationships), to Alaska for the annual salmon run. And while he’s excited for these new memories in the making, the two-time Grammy winner did admit it will be hard to say goodbye to the stage.

“I’m sure I will miss it,” he admitted. “But I swore that I would do this until I embarrassed myself, and I’m getting to where I don’t walk around well.”

Rogers also promised that his final tour stop would be a live concert on the Today show. Some of his most memorable albums are 1978’s The Gambler, 1979’s Kenny, and 2006’s Water & Bridges. His biggest hits (besides “The Gambler”) include 1977’s “Islands in the Stream,” 1979’s “Coward of the County,” 1983’s “We’ve Got Tonight,” and 1977’s “Lucille.”
