Angelina Jolie Talks Maleficent in New Featurette: “We’ve Respected the Classic”

More on the mistress of all evil! Angelina Jolie opens up in the new featurette promoting her upcoming remake of Disney’s classic Sleeping Beauty, which delves into the story of titular villainess Maleficent.

“We’ve respected the classic, we’ve tried to bring you what you love about the story,” Jolie, 38, says in the clip. “We also hope to hope to bring a world that you’ve never seen before. It’s a very beautiful story, and i think it is very different from what people are going to expect,” she adds.

Elle Fanning, who plays Princess Aurora in the upcoming fairy tale thriller, says she was “always sort of intrigued” by Maleficent while watching the original, animated Sleeping Beauty (made in 1959) as a child.

Fanning recently told Us Weekly that it was “a dream” working with Jolie on the movie. “She really got into her character in a way,” Fanning explained. “Like, she was very, so into the details of her clothes. She came into rehearsals on the first day with her Maleficent staff and she was in normal clothes, but had that. She was like ‘I have to get used to it. It’s part of my character.'”

Jolie, for her part, told Entertainment Weekly last month that she “loved” her role as the dark character. “I was quite sad to put my staff down and put my horns away because somehow, she just lives in a different world,” Jolie shared. “But I did have to take my staff home to practice walking with it in my cloak. Then I would go outside and scream at the bushes to expand my voice and play with my voice. So, mom was a bit nutso for a period,” Brad Pitt‘s fiancee joked.

“It’s a reinvention, not just a retelling of the same story,” screenwriter Linda Woolverton explains in the video. “[We] created a past for her that lead to the moment in which she curses Aurora, then takes us past that moment from Maleficent’s point of view.”
