Scarlett Johansson Pregnant: “I’m Not Having Kids Anytime Soon,” She Said in December 2012

Following the news that she's expecting her first child with fiance Romain Dauriac, take a look back at how Scarlett Johansson's views on motherhood and marriage changed through the years. "I'm not having kids anytime soon," the Her actress said in December 2012.

Scarlett Johansson is preparing for her next role, maybe her biggest one yet: motherhood. Source confirmed to Us Weekly on Monday, March 3 that the 29-year-old actress is expecting her first child with fiance Romain Dauriac. Johansson had previously expressed that she was in no rush to have kids or wed again. As it turns out, the stunning Don Jon star — now both engaged and pregnant — changed her mind in a big way.

“I got married when I was young and it was incredibly romantic and I liked being married, actually,” Johansson mused of her failed marriage to Ryan Reynolds in Elle UK (via Gossip Cop) in December 2012. “But it is different. It’s hard to put into words. To me, being in a functioning relationship doesn’t mean you have to be married.”

Johannson and Reynolds, who is now married to Blake Lively, finalized their divorce in July 2011 after two years of marriage. After their split, Johansson had brief romances with actor Sean Penn and ad executive Nate Naylor, before dating Dauriac.

“I never think about marriage. Is that weird? The only time I ever think about it is when people ask me, ‘Would I get married again?'” the Don Jon actress shared in Elle UK. “It’s really not important to me. It has no relevance to me right now. I’m not having kids anytime soon, I’m in a nice relationship, I’m working a lot, and, like I said, it’s not important to me.”

At the time of the interview, Johansson was dating French journalist Dauriac. As their relationship evolved, however, so did her thoughts on the matter. She and Dauriac confirmed their engagement in September 2013, and soon after Johansson revealed her desire to be a mom — but not, it seemed, ASAP.

“I would like to have my own family, that would be nice. They say it’s never the right time and I am sure that’s true, but I think you have to plan it like anything else,” Johansson told the Daily Mail in December 2013. “At some point it is something I look forward to. I am fortunate in that I have had a long career — 20 years — that has been very diverse. So, you know, picking a time to plan a family feels like something that I could do and not feel as though I was missing out.”

Now that she’s pregnant with her first child, will the actress be taking some time off? Though she voiced the title character in the Oscar-winning film Her, Johansson skipped the Academy Awards on Sunday, March 2. She did, however, attend the 39th Cesar Film Awards in Paris with her fiance on Feb. 28. Concealing her tummy, Johansson wore a navy blazer for the event.
