Anne Hathaway: I “Took a Beating on the Internet” in 2013

Anne Hathaway revealed that she followed up her Oscar-winning Les Miserables performance with the low-budget Sundance film Song One because she "took a beating on the Internet" during awards season 2013

Don't worry Internet, she heard you loud and clear. Anne Hathaway has been seemingly MIA from movie screens, magazine covers and Hollywood red carpets following her hugely successful 2013 awards season — and now we know why. The Oscar-winning Les Miserables star was well aware of a public backlash against her, and decided to take a breather from the limelight.

While chatting with MTV's Josh Horowitz, the 31-year-old actress explained why she decided to end that break with the low-budget film, Song One.

"We had been working on the script for almost two years before we actually started shooting. All of the elements came together in that moment," Hathaway explained. "I don't want to bring up a sore subject or anything — I think my publicist is probably like 'No, no no' — but I had just taken a little bit of a beating from the Internet."

This wasn't the first time Hathaway touched on the same subject at Sundance. "My impression is that people needed a break from me," she told the Huffington Post in Park City, Utah.

Indeed, Hathaway's late 2012 and early 2013 were punctuated by many ups — all those trophies! — and downs during awards season. She was criticized for the tone of her acceptance speeches and made headlines when an insider told Us Weekly she threw "a fit" over dress drama with Les Miserables co-star Amanda Seyfried. At the time, the Dark Knight Rises actress decided to ditch her Valentino gown for a petal pink Prada ensemble last-minute after learning during an Oscar's rehearsal that Seyfried, 28, was going to grace the red carpet in a similar number.

"It was the greatest thing in the world to get to work with my friends and get to go to work every day and bring Kate's vision to life, which is a vision that I believe in," Hathaway continued on why she joined Song One. "I had never seen a movie like this. I don't see other people making movies like this. How wonderful to be a part of something new."
