Jumpin' Jumpin'! Michelle Williams opened up to Us Weekly on Monday, May 9, about reuniting with her Destiny's Child sisters Beyonce and Kelly Rowland for the featured track "Say Yes" on her upcoming solo album, Journey to Freedom.
"It was time, you know," said Williams, 33, of collaborating with her R&B girl group members.
Looking prettier than ever at the Think Like a Man Too premiere in Hollywood, Williams elaborated: "We always let each other listen to our music in advance. They heard 'Say Yes' and were like, 'Right now is the time for Destiny's Child to make a single.'" The process was surprisingly simple, in fact. "No red tape, none of that," Williams said.
Williams described "Say Yes" as an "old African song that's been around for about 100 years." She came across it after her producer Harmony Samuels, a Nigerian, told the singer one day, "Michelle, you've got to do this song."
"I'm so glad that I did it," Williams added. "Of course, it features Kelly and Beyonce on there, which just adds more amazingness to it." The trio have remained close friends since Destiny's Child disbanded in 2005; according to Williams, not much has changed inside the studio since then!
"It was so much fun," she said of reuniting in the recording room. "No matter what, with our three voices together, there's no harmony like that." She added, "That blend that we [have]… there’s something spiritual about it."
The only slight change since their days as Destiny's Child, said Williams, have been "growth" and "confidence." Indeed, in the last decade, Williams has tested her acting chops and starred on Broadway in productions like Aida, Chicago, and Fela!. Journey to Freedom will be her fourth solo studio album.
The trio's other two members Rowland and Beyonce have found their own individual successes, too: Rowland, 33, served as an X Factor UK judge and released her fourth studio album last June. She also recently married Tim Weatherspoon and is now pregnant with the couple's first child. Global sensation Beyonce, meanwhile, 32-year-old mother of Blue Ivy, dropped her fifth studio album in December.
"As far as Beyonce's concerned," Williams said, "it's amazing to see her be an amazing wife and mother."
"Everybody's their own woman doing their own thing," Williams concluded to Us.
