Dear John, want another? John Mayer told TMZ on Monday, June 2, that he was fine with being the subject of his famous ex-girlfriends’ music. In fact, the singer said he wants their music to light up the charts.
"I have super strength for gang-ups," Mayer said. "I'm fine." He added, "That's what you're supposed to do, man. You're supposed to write songs. You're just not supposed to tell everybody you're doing it."
The hunky Paradise Valley singer threw some shade when he was told by the TMZ cameraman that Katy Perry was possibly penning a track about him. "I actually want everybody's song to go number 1," he said, laughing. "I purposely stopped writing hits to give other people a chance to have number 1 songs. I just stand to the side."
As Cosmopolitan announced last week, "Roar" songstress Perry is expected to divulge details regarding her relationship with Mayer in all 62 global issues of the mag. Her much-anticipated interview comes just four months after the "Who You Love" collaborators split in February.
Along with Perry, Mayer's other high-profile exes include Taylor Swift and Jessica Simpson. Country-pop sweetheart Swift, for her part, famously slammed Mayer in a 2010 song aptly titled "Dear John." Mayer later retorted in a June 2012 interview that the track was "cheap songwriting" and he was "humiliated" by it. "It's abusing your talent," he told Rolling Stone, adding: "That's bullsh—… It really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down."
Many fans later believed that his "Paper Doll" track was written about Swift.
"Songwriters write songs because of people, about people," Mayer said in an interview without directly confirming if Swift was his inspiration for the track. "Anything someone else wrote is their reception of a song. I don't get involved with [it]. It's none of my business."
