Scott Weiland
Scott Weiland

Scott Weiland was passionate about emerging artists. The late Stone Temple Pilots frontman, who was found dead on Thursday, Dec. 3, in Bloomington, Minn., was enthusiastic during his last interview with Us Weekly this past March, gushing about some of his favorite underground bands.

As previously reported, the rocker passed away in his sleep on his tour bus, which was parked at a motel. He was 48 years old. He leaves behind his wife of two years, Jamie Wachtel, and his kids from a previous relationship, Lucy and Noah

"I’ve done a number of interviews lately where I outline my all-time favorite bands, albums, songs, etc," Weiland told Us Weekly's Ian Drew at the time. "I thought it would be fun to highlight a few bands that aren’t on the massive Bowie/Pixies/Stones kinda level — yet. Check ‘em out if you haven’t already!"

Read on for Weiland’s playlist from March, along with his sentiments about each band:

1. “Yours Forever” from the Generationals album Alix: “Very cool little band from New Orleans. Their sound has changed a bit from their first album…“Yours Forever” grooves with a happy, ethereal, melodic sound. Saw these guys at the Troubador not too long ago and they were awesome."

2. “Wanted Man” by The Last Internationale: “They’ve been opening for my band, The Wildabouts, for the second time on our current tour. They are a soulful, simple three-piece with a spacious approach, and “Wanted Man” is great, gritty, soulful rock and roll. Fun fact: When they play at The Viper Room in Los Angeles, Tommy Black (bass player for The Wildabouts) jams with them…good stuff!”

3. “Ride Ride Ride” by Nettie Rose: “She’s an L.A. native who writes lyrics that are killer raw and real and delivers them with the voice of a most tenacious angel. Be sure to get your hands on every song from this girl…and tell all your friends about her because you will be the coolest kid on the block for knowing her before everybody else did.”

4. “Bad ‘n’ Ruin” by The Faces: “Not exactly unknown, but definitely underrated. This band should be required listening for anyone who plays in a rock and roll band. Long Player is essential.”

5. “California” by Delta Spirit: “This song has powerful lyrics and a sound that resonates and just fills the room. There is almost a church-like reverence in their music that reverberates through the soul. With all the disposable pop coming out of Nashville and the infusion of country and rock happening everywhere in the music industry, it’s nice to hear a band that embodies the best of both worlds in such a singular way.”

6. “When My Time Comes” by Dawes: “Both their look and sound are classic and unassuming; they don’t vie for attention because they don’t need to. Just consider this: Taylor Goldsmith was the ‘odd man out’ in the Bob Dylan Basement Tapes Showtime documentary. The band has backed Jackson Browne and are well on their way to making a huge name for themselves.”

7. “Nothing Good Ever Happens at the Thirsty Cow” by Father John Misty: “We all got mad at Jeremy Brown, our guitar player, for playing this track over and over and over on this tour. But the dude is onto something. Actually, both Jeremy and Father John Misty are on to something. Rock on, fellow amazing musicians.”
