Mayim Bialik may be done nursing her sons, but she's not finished showing her support for breastfeeding. The outspoken mom of two and proponent of attachment parenting, opened up to Huffington Post on Friday, Feb. 21, about why she has no regrets for having breastfed her children in public in the past.
"I think anywhere you give a bottle, you breastfeed," the Big Bang Theory actress explained. "I didn't feel the need to be immodest, but also feel like that's going to vary from woman to woman. I would try and be, absolutely, respectful and conscious of the community I was in, but I don't believe you need to cover up a baby eating, anymore than you need to cover up a baby drinking a bottle."
In 2011, Bialik made headlines when she posted a photo of herself nursing son Fred, then 3, on a New York City subway. Despite the "tremendous amount of backlash" she received, Bialik stands by her decision. "What I like to point out is that was the best way for that subway ride to be pleasant for everyone," she joked.
The Blossom alum is mom to sons Miles, 8, and Fred, now 5, with ex-husband Michael Stone. On her Jewish parenting blog Kveller, Bialik has shared her thoughts on attachment parenting, a child-led parenting style that encourages bonding through co-sleeping, babywearing and breastfeeding.
"Breastfeeding is not a sexual act. It's an intimate act, and that makes some people uncomfortable," she explained to Huffington Post. "But that's completely normal to have all of the humane hormones that are released when you breastfeed regulating your relationship with your child — that's simply normal."
