Break out the tissues! The Fault in our Stars costars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort offered a sneak peek at their upcoming film with the debut of a new clip on Sunday, April 13. Making its premiere during the live broadcast of the MTV Movie Awards, the video shows unseen footage from the tearjerker.
Woodley, 22, stars in the movie as a young woman named Hazel, who meets Gus (Elgort) in a support group for teenagers with cancer. Elgort, 20, is shown in the clip putting a cigarette between his lips, sparking immediate criticism from Hazel, who calls the cigarette “disgusting” and questions how a cancer patient could put himself at risk for more cancer.
“They don’t actually hurt you unless you light them,” Elgort says as Gus in the scene. “I never lit one. It’s a metaphor, see? You put the thing that does the killing right between your teeth, but you never give it the power to kill you.”
Hitting theaters on June 6, The Fault in our Stars is an adaptation of the John Green novel by the same name. Watch the latest look at the film above.
