Ellen DeGeneres’ Opening Monologue at Oscars 2014: Jennifer Lawrence, June Squibb, Jonah Hill Teased

Second time’s the charm for Ellen DeGeneres! Following Seth MacFarlane‘s controversial jokes last year, the 56-year-old comedienne gave a milder opening monologue at the 2014 Oscars in Hollywood on Sunday, March 2. DeGeneres did, however, pick a few celebrities to poke fun at — particularly American Hustle actress Jennifer Lawrence.

“Jennifer Lawrence, by the way, I’m not going to bring up what happened last year,” DeGeneres told the Best Supporting Actress nominee. “It’s ridiculous. Something like that happens and it’s embarrassing, and then people just talk about it. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, last year she fell on her way up. Let’s just show the clip,” the host joked.

Indeed, Lawrence did trip going up the stairs last year to accept her award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Silver Linings Playbook. This year, the 23-year-old actress tripped again before she even made it into the Dolby Theatre.

“And you know the thing about when you fell out of the car tonight when you were getting out the car? No one needs to know about that,” DeGeneres told Lawrence, who was sitting in the audience between costar Bradley Cooper and boyfriend Nicholas Hoult. “I’m not going to mention that. She fell on the way out of the car,” the Oscar host explained to the crowd. “Like on an orange cone you tripped or something. If you win tonight, I think we should bring you the Oscar.”

In addition to Lawrence, DeGeneres poked fun at Nebraska actress and first-time Oscar nominee June Squibb. “I’m telling everyone that you were wonderful in Nebraska,” DeGeneres yelled to Best Supporting Actress nominee, who recently celebrated her 84th birthday.

When speaking about Captain Phillips star Barkhad Abdi, a Somali-American actor nominated for Best Supporting Actor, DeGeneres quipped: “He’s a sommelier, so he knows a lot about wine . . . Who’s the wine captain now?”

DeGeneres wrapped up her monologue by making fun of Jonah Hills raunchy role in The Wolf of Wall Street, which earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. “You showed us something in that film that I haven’t seen in a very long time,” the host quipped of Hill, who flashed a prosthetic penis in the flick.
