Robin Thicke on His Attempts to Win Back Paula Patton: “I Actually Have No Idea What I’m Doing”

Robin Thicke
Appearing on Good Morning America on July 2, Robin Thicke admitted that he has "no idea" what he's doing with his attempts to win back estranged wife Paula Patton

Not even Robin Thicke knows what Robin Thicke is doing these days. Since splitting from longtime love Paula Patton earlier this year, the "Get Her Back" singer has made several overtures to win back his estranged wife, even going so far as to name his new album after her. His public pleas have raised a lot of questions—but Thicke, 37, doesn't have the answers.

"I actually have no idea what I'm doing. I'm just kind of flying by the seat of my pants on this one," he admitted on Wednesday, July 2, during an appearance on Good Morning America. "I just wanted to make something artistic out of a very difficult period. When you lose the love of your life, you don't have much to hide anymore."

"She's the best person I ever met," he added, "so I thought the least I could do would be to devote an album to her."

Paula—the album, not the person—features 14 songs about Thicke's lost love, including "You're My Fantasy," "Lock the Door," "Too Little Too Late" and "Forever Love." He wrote all of them "over the course of two weeks," he said.

Speaking of the track "Forever Love," Thicke explained that he wanted to send a hopeful message about their future. "I didn't want [the record] to be all depressing because I didn't want her to listen to it and [be] sad only," he told GMA, "so I wanted there to be moments where she had hope and positivity that…her and I can both still have a great life, no matter what happens and we'll be great friends and great parents." (The couple share son Julian, 4.)

He also revealed that his new music video, for the song "Still Madly Crazy," was inspired by his nuptials to Patton, 38. As previously reported, it features several young children dressed up in tuxedos and white dresses, lip-synching and giving wedding speeches.

"When I was looking through some of our old wedding photos and our sentimental stuff, I saw the pictures of the kids at our wedding," Thicke said, "and I thought it might be nice to recreate a wedding through the eyes of the 8-year-olds."
