After a second skin cancer scare in early May, Hugh Jackman issued a reminder to his fans to protect their skin. “Another Basal Cell Carcinoma. All out now. Thanks Dr. Albom and Dr. Arian,” the X-Men: Days of Future Past star posted via Instagram on May 8. “PLEASE! PLEASE! WEAR SUNSCREEN!”
Jackman’s request comes just in time for Skin Cancer Awareness Month in May. While protecting yourself against deadly melanoma is as simple as applying SPF each day, many ignore the advice.
“Men are hesitant to wear a sunscreen every day,” says Mike Gilman, men’s grooming expert and president of Grooming Lounge. “They just don’t want to put anything on their skin; it’s time consuming and ‘annoying’ to many guys. And they’re under the misperception that they only need to put sunscreen on when it’s really hot and sunny out. It’s important to clearly communicate to men that UV rays can really damage their skin, even when it’s cloudy out.”
To make preventing skin cancer a little easier, Us Weekly has rounded up the manliest sunscreens on the market.
For the low-maintenance guy, Jack Black Double-Duty Face Moisturizer SPF 20 ($27, Groominglounge.com) hydrates skin and provides protection from UVA and UVB rays.
For the outdoor sports-enthusiast, Epicuren Active Sport Treat Sunscreen SPF 30 ($41, Epicuren.com) offers 80-minutes of protection during epic swim workouts.
For the lotion-phobic, MDSolarSciences Mineral Sunscreen Stick SPF 40 ($18, Drugstore.com) can be stashed in his pocket without fear of leakage for applications on-the-go.
For the silver fox, Kiehl’s Facial Fuel SPF 15 Sunscreen ($35, Groominglounge.com) also contains vitamins C and E to repair mature or dull-looking skin.
