Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd are putting the “com” back in rom-coms. The stars—who appeared together in the 2001 cult classic Wet Hot American Summer and on Poehler’s NBC sitcom, Parks and Recreation—have reunited for the new movie They Came Together, a spoof of the romantic-comedy genre.
Wet Hot director David Wain is the mastermind behind the film, which skewers cliches found in classic boy-meets-girl movies like You’ve Got Mail and When Harry Met Sally. Poehler, 42, plays Molly, a woman who—against all odds, of course—falls crazy in love with Joel, played by Rudd, 45.
“We threw in every element: the opposites-attract story line, the Jewish-but-not-too-Jewish funny leading man, the klutzy woman whom you kind of love, the sassy best friend, the black best friend, the wise old grandmother,” Wain told Entertainment Weekly of the film. “Anything we could think of, we found a place for it in there.”
Anything — and anyone. The movie also boasts an impressive roster of comedians including Bill Hader, Ellie Kemper, Chris Meloni, Ken Marino, Cobie Smulders, and Max Greenfield.
