Matt Lauer is set for Today—and many more tomorrows. According to a report from the New York Times, NBC extended the Today show veteran's contract for "multiple more years." (An exact length of time was not available, but the Times says it's "more than two.")
"I consider this the best job in broadcasting," Lauer said in a statement on Thursday, June 12. "I love people I work with every day and I have such respect and gratitude for the people I work for. I couldn't be happier to be staying."
NBC couldn't be happier, either. "We couldn't be more thrilled with Matt's decision," NBC News president Deborah Turness told the Times. "As I've said many times before, he's the best in the business, and there is nobody I would rather have in the Today anchor chair than Matt."
Lauer—whose current contract was set to expire in a few months, according to the Times—is already the longest-serving anchor in Today show history. He's been in the position since 1997, and has seen many other colleagues come and go, including Katie Couric and, most infamously, Ann Curry.
Earlier this week, the 56-year-old morning show co-host joined Facebook and took part in a Q&A with fans. Reflecting on his long tenure, Lauer recalled his most awkward interview ever, with Tom Cruise in 2005. "It was one of those unforgettable moments that became a part of pop culture," he said of the chat.
