It's time for Tris to meet the mother! Oscar nominee Naomi Watts has signed on for a major role in the upcoming Divergent sequel Insurgent, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Australian actress will play Evelyn, the leader of the Factionless and the estranged mother of Tris' boyfriend Four (Theo James).
The first film in the franchise starred Shailene Woodley in the lead role of Tris, a girl struggling to find her own identity in a dystopian society, which separates people based on specific personality traits.
Evelyn plays a big part in both Insurgent and the series' final installment, Allegiant. She brings a bit of a wedge between Four and Tris, and gives a rare glimpse into the reserved Dauntless trainer's background.
The highly-anticipated sequel began shooting in Atlanta last week. In addition to Woodley and James, the cast features Kate Winslet, Woodley's Fault in Our Stars love interest Ansel Elgort, and Miles Teller.
Oscar winner Octavia Spencer has also signed onto the film series as Johanna, the leader of the peaceful Amity faction.
Insurgent hits theaters March 20, 2015. Tell Us: What do you think of this casting?
