According to CBS News, Samarin created a false identity after his visa expired. Harrisburg police say that the man pretended to be Harrisburg High School student Asher Potts and that he had a 4.16 grade-point average. He was also in the National Honor Society. The local ABC affiliate reports that Samarin tried to pass himself off as an 18-year-old senior.

According to CBS, he was enrolled in the fall of 2012 and was actively involved in the school’s programs, including ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) and Naval Sea Cadet programs.

Samarin was even honored with an ROTC recognition award from state representative Patty Kim, who tweeted a photo congratulating the alleged student back in May 2014. “Asher Potts, #HBG HS soph with a 4.16 GPA in ROTC is a new member of the Nat'l Honor Society. #goingplaces #proud,” Kim wrote.

Samarin was charged with identity theft and tampering with public records.
