Katy Perry and Amber Rose both accomplished the ultimate throwback looks on the red carpet during the 2014 MTV VMAs at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., on Sunday, Aug. 24. The “Dark Horse” singer and rapper Riff Raff channeled Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s infamous denim-on-denim look, while Rose showed off her derriere in a revealing chain outfit just like Rose McGowan.

Luckily for the ladies, both Spears and McGowan were more than pleased with the results. “.@britneyspears I did my best impression, hope u likey!” Perry wrote via Twitter about her custom Versace dress. Spears replied: “.@katyperry Just when I thought the denim dress had retired….you bring it back! You looked amazing tonight bb ;)”
The “Ooh La La” singer and then-boyfriend Timberlake made a lasting impression as they coordinated their outfits while attending the American Music Awards back in 2001. Spears accessorized her denim dress with silver jewelry and a belt while Timberlake stepped it up with a matching cowboy hat and clear sunglasses.
While Perry and Spears decided to cover up, the Rose ladies left little to the imagination. The Charmed actress turned heads in a black metal dress while being escorted by then-boyfriend Marilyn Manson in 1998. Like Spears, she approved of Rose’s draped, sequined Laurel DeWitt ensemble.
“Happily passing the torch to @muvarosebud #amberrose ignore the hand wringers. #punkasf**k #unapologetic @mtv,” McGowan captioned a throwback pic of her attire via Instagram. Rose gushed: “Thank u @rosemcgowan for being a fabulous trendsetter u were truly my inspiration tonight.”
