How I Met Your Dad is hanging by a thread. The highly-anticipated How I Met Your Mother spinoff just "didn't work out," reporters were told at the CBS Upfronts in NYC on Wednesday, May 14.

"We have an extraordinary track record of retooling shows," CBS' Nina Tassler said (via Entertainment Weekly). "We tried to reach out and engage them about redoing the pilot, but it's just not happening. You run into these kinds of issues. You hope they can resolve themselves. They haven't." She added: "I'm heartsick. It wasn't what they wanted to do."

How I Met Your Dad originated from HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, and producer Emily Spivey, and was set to star Greta Gerwig. The 30-year-old actress, best-known for her portrayal as a struggling dancer in Frances Ha, was to play Sally, described as a "female Peter Pan who never has grown up and has no idea where she's going in life."

The show drew even more attention when it was announced last month that Meg Ryan would be voicing "future Sally." (Bob Saget voiced Josh Radnor's "future Ted" on HIMYM from 2005 to its season finale last March.)

"I loved it so much," Ryan, 52, told Vulture of the HIMYM finale in April. "No, I wanted [Ted and Robin] to [end up together]! I'm such a schmaltzy person. It's like, yes, I know that Annie Hall is the best ending of all time when they don't end up together. But really, in my heart of hearts — I love in When Harry Met Sally when they end up together. I'm a little too corny for the sadder version."

The future of How I Met Your Dad is yet to be seen, but producers of the show can still have the opportunity to shop to other networks.
