Weird Al Yankovic Spoofs Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” With “Word Crimes”: Watch the Video

Weird Al‘s way with words! The master of parody struck again on Tuesday, July 15, by releasing a spoof of Robin Thicke‘s trademark sexy smash “Blurred Lines,” with his own rendition, “Word Crimes.”

Weird Al’s second of eight new music videos varies from his first—a riff on Pharrell’s “Happy” which featured Yankovic, 54, and comedy all-stars Jack Black, Eric Stonestreet, and others, behaving like “Tacky” people.

“Word Crimes” is set to the tune of Thicke’s 2013 hit, but the lyrics are replaced by the rules of composition. Yankovic sings in the opening lines, “If you can’t write, in the proper way / If you don’t know, how to conjugate / Maybe you flunked that class, and maybe now you find. / That people mock you online.”

The lyricist told NPR recently that he had to think of a more original “Blurred Lines” spoof after watching countless other parodies on YouTube. “I’m never the first person to do a parody of a certain song,” explained Weird Al, whose legendary work includes “Like a Surgeon,” “Eat It,” and “Amish Paradise.”

“All the obvious ideas seem to be taken already,” Al continued, “so nowadays when I do a parody I try to think of an angle that might be a little bit different or left-of-center that somebody else hasn’t thought of already. And I don’t think anybody, to this point, had done a ‘Blurred Lines’ parody about proper use of grammar.”

Yankovic’s fourteenth studio album, Mandatory Fun, was released Tuesday, July 15. To mark the follow-up to 2011’s Alpocalypse, he will continue to release one new video parody daily through next Monday, July 21.
