Miley Cyrus truly can’t stop. Amid her ongoing international Bangerz Tour, the wild singer found the time to shoot the cover for the May issue of Elle magazine, appearing shockingly covered up in a Marc Jacobs sequined tunic top and trousers.
While her body was not on display this time around, Cyrus, 21, bared all with her emotions, opening up to the magazine about her relationship with her former fiancé, Liam Hemsworth, her life as a child star, and being “free” of Disney.
“You know, I’m really thankful that I started on Disney,” Cyrus told fashion wunderkind Tavi Gevinson, who conducted the interview for Elle. “I got the most intense training. There’s times where I wish I could have just started as a new artist, but the world has kind of allowed me to do that. I feel really lucky — a lot of kid stars get all crazy or stuck in what they were, so they can’t actually become what they’re meant to be.”
Cyrus, who ended her engagement with Hunger Games star Hemsworth last fall, went on to discuss her life as a woman independent of both a relationship with a significant other and a contract with Disney.
“When I went through a really intense breakup — you know, I was engaged — and when I was with him or when I was on Disney, the thing that gave me the most anxiety was not knowing what to do with myself when Disney wasn’t there to carry me anymore or if I didn’t have him,” the former Hannah Montana star explained. “And now I’m free of both of those things, and I’m fine.”
Recently linked to a variety of men, including multi-hyphenate Jared Leto, Twilight actor Kellan Lutz, and producer Mike Will Made It, Cyrus is much more “fine” than she expected to be. “Like, I lay in bed at night by myself and I’m totally okay,” she continued. “That’s so much stronger than the person three years ago, who would have thought they would have died if they didn’t have a boyfriend.”
Elle’s Women in Music issue also has Cyrus touching on her relationship with her fans, her thoughts on feminism, and her struggle with depression. Pick up the issue on newsstands on April 22.
