Reese Witherspoon is ready to get Wild. The Oscar-winning actress returns to the big screen in Wild, as tortured heroin addict Cheryl Strayed, as seen in the first preview released Thursday, July 10.

The film, which is based on Strayed’s number one New York Times bestselling book of the same name, tells the story of her real-life trek along the Pacific Crest Trail. Strayed embarked upon her arduous journey to help cope with her mother’s death, a failed relationship, and a drug addiction.

In the first scenes of the trailer, Witherspoon quotes Emily Dickinson and nurses her bruised feet, wounded from walking along the 1,100 mile trail. She gets dirty, talks to an ex-boyfriend on the phone, has sex with random men, does drugs, and even bonds with a fox. “What if all those things I did were the things that got me here?” Witherspoon reflects in character.

In February, the married mother of three hosted the Young Women’s Conference at her daughter Ava‘s school. Speaking about her production company, Witherspoon said she was interested in finding material “that really had strong female characters” as part of an effort to “create more realistic women” in movies. “That’s what really drives me,” she said.

Witherspoon is not the film’s only A-list draw. High Fidelity author Nick Hornby wrote Wild‘s screenplay, while Jean-Marc Vallee, best known for directing 2014 Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club, helmed it.

Strayed, already pleased with the outcome of the trailer, wrote on Facebook: “Thanks for all the sweet comments about the Wild trailer! It makes me cry.”
