Blake Shelton: My Relationship With Gwen Stefani ‘Is a Little Weird’

He came here to have fun! Blake Shelton opened up to the Today show on Thursday, May 19, about his relationship with Gwen Stefani, and admitted that he didn’t expect to end up with somebody like her.

The singer, 39, sat down with Savannah Guthrie to discuss his wild past year. “It’s a little weird,” the “Came Here to Forget” singer told Today on Thursday. “We could not be, on paper, any more different. I mean, I’m a country singer and she’s a ska, rock, pop, whatever it is … and it’s just an odd idea. But man, it’s a lot of fun. I’ve gotta be honest about that.”

Shelton and his ex-wife Miranda Lambert divorced last July. During the difficult time, Shelton found solace in his fellow Voice coach Stefani, 46, who was grappling with her messy divorce (he cheated with their kids’ nanny) from Gavin Rossdale. After months of flirtation, the stars confirmed their relationship to Us Weekly exclusively last November.

The two recently collaborated on their duet, “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” which is now part of the Angry Birds Movie soundtrack.

“I actually wrote that song, started it just to try to impress her, to be honest with you,” Shelton recalled. “I sent it to her just half done and said, ‘I wrote a song, kind of about you,’ and she wrote the next verse and sent it back to me. And so it was like, ‘Oh, we’ve got a song together.’ That’s kind of cool.”

Shelton penned one of his ex Lambert’s biggest hits, “Over You,” which was inspired by the loss of his brother, Richie Shelton, who was killed at 24, when Blake was just 14 years old. The country superstar told Guthrie on Thursday that he refers heavily to the past year of his life in his 12th studio album, If I’m Honest.

“I figured because everyone else is cashing in on my life, I might as well too. So, that’s what the record is,” he said.

Stefani has echoed her boyfriend’s sentiments in previous interviews, including one particularly memorable chat with the New York Times back in March. “[He] had been going through literally the exact same thing in literally the exact same time frame,” said Stefani, whose own recently released album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like, is chock-full of tracks inspired by Shelton. “Never in my wildest, craziest dreams would I ever have seen this coming.”
