NBC has not commented on the casting change, but Wheelan is already receiving some big love. Comedic writer, producer, and director Judd Apatow tweeted after the news broke, “@brookswheelan you will have the Robert Downey Jr. post SNL career! (minus the painful drug addiction). Rock on friend!”

Wheelan replied, “@JuddApatow thanks man! I'm gonna take this time to formally submit myself for the Ironman reboot in 2021 and the Chaplin reboot in 2032.”

The Iowa native had no major characters on SNL, but did frequently appear on the show’s Weekend Update segment as himself, offering PSAs based on his own irresponsible behavior.
