New blood! Michael Che joined Colin Jost on Saturday, Sept. 27, to host his first Weekend Update segment on Saturday Night Live.
Che, 31, made his debut behind the anchors’ desk on the 40th season premiere of SNL, which was hosted by Chris Pratt and featured a musical performance by Ariana Grande.
The Daily Show alum, who is SNL‘s first African-American Weekend Update host, took a few minutes to settle in to the new role, stumbling on his lines in his first story about President Obama‘s fight against ISIS. He took it in stride, however, laughing as he found his footing.
It was announced earlier this month that Che would replace funnywoman Cecily Strong, who hosted Weekend Update first with Seth Meyers, and second with Jost, following Meyers’ departure. Strong, 30, still made an appearance on this week’s Weekend Update, reprising one of her trademark characters, the Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party.
Some of SNL‘s most famous alumni have taken on the role of Weekend Update host. Meyers held the position from 2008 until 2013, when he left the sketch show to host Late Night. Other famous faces from Weekend Update include Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Jimmy Fallon, and the original host, Chevy Chase.
