“Brooklyn Girls” Song Goes Viral, Singer Catey Shaw Gets Hate: Watch Now!

As a singer breaking into the business, going viral is typically an exciting time. But Virginia Beach native-turned-Brooklyn, N.Y. resident Catey Shaw might have a different attitude when it comes to her new “Brooklyn Girls” single that’s quickly sweeping across the Internet.

The indie pop hit’s upbeat tempo and repetitive lyrics effortlessly loop like a merry-go-round tune, and many New York natives have come out in opposition of her anthem honoring the popular borough.

New York news site Gothamist said the video “will make you want to move back to Ohio” and sarcastically noted, “there can never be too many reasons for young women to dream about moving to Brooklyn and taking lots of Instagram pics while posing in front of graffiti.”

Recalling the viral homemade video phenomenon of 2011 “Friday,” Noisey music blog called Shaw “The Rebecca Black of Brooklyn gentrification.” The twenty-something singer with blue, ombre locks hops around the streets of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in her combat boots, playing her ukulele in a crop top and a Brooklyn Nets snapback.

“Brooklyn girls, when they walk in, they rule the world. Brooklyn girls, tough and pretty, break the rules,” the chorus continuously repeats as Shaw’s video shows ladies with shaved heads, tattoos, piercings, while images of PBR and the romanticized L train flash in the background.

“Jay Z bumps in her headphones, drinks on top of the brownstone, get it on in the bathroom stall,” Shaw croons of the “gritty” ladies of Brooklyn.
