This week another distorted and disturbing American Horror Story world will come to life when season 4, titled Freak Show, premieres on Wednesday, Oct. 8 on FX. To prepare fans of the hit Ryan Murphy show for this latest installment, there have been a series of creepy promos, some featuring the haunting song “Carousel” by New York singer-songwriter Melanie Martinez.
If her breathy tone sounds familiar, it’s because the 19-year-old appeared on season 3 of The Voice, adding some diversity to Team Adam Levine. The Maroon 5 rocker, who appeared on American Horror Story: Asylum in 2012, has remained a staunch supporter of Martinez, whom he dubbed his “little sister” on the NBC competition series.
After releasing her debut single “Dollhouse” in February, Martinez went on to put out an EP in May, featuring “Carousel,” a song that would later be featured in the American Horror Story promos.
Telling the Huffington Post that AHS is “absolutely, hands down” her favorite show, Martinez contacted FX about the song as soon as she heard this season’s theme would be carnival-related. After almost a year of silence, she got the call from the network just two days before the promo aired.
“The whole thing was just crazy,” she told HuffPo.
Martinez attended the Los Angeles premiere for Freak Show on Sunday, Oct. 5 wearing blue lipstick, dyed pink eyebrows, and her signature two-toned hair — a subtle combo of royal blue and black. The teenage photographer is known not only for her eerie voice, but also for her eccentric style. Her “Dollhouse” music video, which has earned more than 7 million views in eight months, features her wearing a necklace made of baby doll arms and a giant pink bow on top of her head.
Up next, Martinez’s “Carousel” music video is set to be released soon, and she is currently putting the finishing touches on her first album.
American Horror Story: Freak Show premieres on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
