Twitter to Stop Including Photos and Links in 140-Character Limit: Report

The change could happen in as soon as two weeks, the website reports. (Twitter declined to comment to Bloomberg on the new policy.) Currently, links take up 23 characters and photos take up 24, so the amended character count would help users include significantly more content in tweets.

The tech company has been looking to increase the character limit on tweets for a while to give people more flexibility. Back in August, Twitter removed the length restrictions on direct messages, and in January, CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted a message that he was thinking of expanding the character count. “We’ve spent a lot of time observing what people are doing on Twitter, and we see them taking screenshots of text and tweeting it,” he said. “Instead, what if that text … was actually text? Text that could be searched. Text that could be highlighted. That’s more utility and power.”

“It’s become a beautiful constraint, and I love it. It inspires creativity and brevity,” Dorsey wrote. After much backlash about the proposed idea, it seemed that Twitter decided that the short text is part of what sets the social media platform apart from competitors.

The new change might be a compromise between unlimited characters and the classic restriction. The 140-character limit was originally imposed in 2006 to allow users to send tweets via text from mobile devices in a pre-smartphone era.
