Dancing With the Stars Recap: Janel Parrish, Val Chmerkovskiy Channel Romeo and Juliet on Dynamic Duos Night

Dancing with the Stars
After last week's Halloween episode (pictured), Dancing With the Stars' remaining seven couples competed on Dynamic Duos night

It takes two, baby! Dancing With the Stars' Dynamic Duos night on Monday, Nov. 3, was all about celebrating famous partnerships and pairs throughout history. The remaining seven couples performed individual routines inspired by both real and fictional twosomes, and then faced each other in a series of dance-offs for bonus points. Let's recap!

Lea Thompson and Artem Chigvintsev as Bonnie and Clyde

Lea and Artem channeled their inner rebels this week to portray notorious outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. Their jazz routine had plenty of flair — but not nearly enough drama. As head judge Len Goodman said afterward, "You gotta risk it to get the biscuit, and you're a little bit safe." Added Bruno Tonioli: "It has to have more of a reckless, badass attitude."

Score: 32 out of 40 (8 from everyone)

Michael Waltrip and Emma Slater as Tarzan and Jane

A loincloth-wearing Michael did his best to be lord of both the jungle and the dance, but his foxtrot left something to be desired. While Len said it was the best performance he'd seen from the NASCAR driver, the other judges were underwhelmed, to say the least.

Score: 25 out of 40 (7 from Len, 6 from everyone else)

Janel Parrish and Val Chmerkovskiy as Romeo and Juliet

Janel and Val stunned as Shakespeare's famed star-crossed lovers, performing a romantic contemporary routine that Bruno described as "extremely ambitious, yet gorgeous and glorious in every possible way." Carrie Ann praised the dance as Val's "finest choreography," while Julianne Hough described it as "breathtaking."

Score: 40 out of 40 (10 from everyone)

Tommy Chong and Peta Murgatroyd as Johnny and June Cash

Tommy's considerable charm, which propelled him into the top seven, served him well this week. Even though he was about a beat behind the music for nearly his entire paso doble with Peta, he won over the judges with what Carrie Ann called his "magic mojo." Quipped Len: "You're like a hot dog — you're tasty, but you're never sure about the content."

Score: 26 out of 40 (7 from Len and Julianne, 6 from Carrie Ann and Bruno)

Sadie Robertson and Mark Ballas as Adam and Eve

Mark was a little miffed by Len's comments about his and Sadie's dance last week, but he refused to let his creativity be stifled. This time around, he choreographed an intense, theatrical contemporary routine depicting the biblical story of Adam and Eve — and Len loved it. "You won't be banished from the garden of Eden," he told Mark. "You're back next week."

Score: 38 out of 40 (10 from Julianne and Bruno, 9 from Carrie Ann and Len)

Alfonso Ribeiro and Witney Carson as Batman and Robin

Kapow! Alfonso and Witney performed a superpowered cha cha as DC Comics' Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder. "Every time you come out, you are pure entertainment," Julianne gushed of the Fresh Prince star. Added Carrie Ann: "There is something so right about seeing you as Batman, and [Witney] as Robin."

Score: 38 out of 40 (10 from Carrie Ann and Bruno, 9 from Len and Julianne)

Bethany Mota and Derek Hough as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo

Bethany and Derek paid tribute to one of the most beloved couples in sitcom history, I Love Lucy's Ricky and Lucy, with a lively, delightfully campy salsa routine set to the Cuban song "Babalu." The judges were full of praise, and rightfully so — but when are they not after a performance by Derek?

Score: 37 out of 40 (10 from Bruno, 9 from everyone else)

Janel and Val got the highest score this week, so they were immune from elimination — and exempt from the dance-off portion of the night. The remaining six couples had to compete against one another for bonus points from the judges. The matchups were as follows:

Alfonso and Witney vs. Lea and Artem

Since Alfonso and Witney got to choose their opponents, Lea and Artem got to choose the style of dance — jive. Each couple performed a short routine, after which they faced the judges. Len, Julianne, and Bruno were pretty diplomatic with their comments, but Carrie Ann made no bones about her preference for Alfonso and Witney. "You guys killed it," she told them.

Dance-off winners: Alfonso and Witney (unanimous)

Sadie and Mark vs. Bethany and Derek

With only two dances left to choose from, Bethany and Derek opted to go with a cha cha. After both couples had performed, they convened in front of the judges, who hemmed and hawed over which twosome to choose. All four panelists seemed genuinely torn, noting that each pair had different strengths. "It's like a clash of the titans," Bruno said. Quipped Len: "I'd like to see it all again."

Dance-off winners: Bethany and Derek (The vote was split — Carrie Ann and Bruno picked Sadie and Mark, Len and Julianne picked Bethany and Derek — so the winner was determined based on head judge Len's choice.)

Michael and Emma vs. Tommy and Peta

As the last couples to compete, Michael and Emma and Tommy and Peta were left with the rumba, which neither pair had ever done on the show. Their performances were relatively similar; though Michael's routine had more steps, Tommy's was better executed. And in the end, that was more important to the judges.

Dance-off winners: Tommy and Peta (unanimous)

The dance-off results turned out to be very telling. After all was said and done, a teary Michael and Emma were cut from the competition. Both were clearly heartbroken, but Michael said he'd cherish what he'd learned for the rest of his life.

"It was a chance to do something that was more emotional than it was physical," he said of the experience, as Emma fought back tears beside him. "I just grew so much emotionally, and I'm a better person because of my tenure here."
