The Breakfast Club’s Princess, Criminal, Basket Case, and More Returning to Theaters for 30th Anniversary

The Breakfast Club
John Hughes' '80s cult classic The Breakfast Club is returning to theaters in honor of its 30th anniversary -- get the details

Skip the popcorn, and grab the Cap’n Crunch! The Breakfast Club will be returning to theaters for a limited release in honor of its upcoming 30th anniversary. The ’80s cult classic will be shown across the country from Thursday, March 26, to Tuesday, March 31.

A restored version of John Hughes‘ flick will be shown, along with a featurette with cast commentary after the credits roll.

The Breakfast Club premiered in 1985 and stars Judd Nelson (John Bender), Molly Ringwald (Claire Standish), Emilio Estevez (Andrew Clark), Anthony Michael Hall (Brian Johnson), and Ally Sheedy (Allison Reynolds). The five actors, among other ’80s heartthrobs, were given the title “The Brat Pack” for often costarring together on the big screen.

The cast last reunited in September 2010 to celebrate the movie’s 25th anniversary. “John Hughes gave me my start. I think that Hollywood always glamorized things and put things on a pedestal,” Hall told Us Weekly in NYC at the time. “John allowed us all to feel vulnerable. He was brilliant at using humor to get to that place.”

Hughes, who also wrote classics such as Home Alone (1990), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986), Pretty in Pink (1986), and Sixteen Candles (1984), passed away at 59 in August 2009. “I can’t believe he’s gone,” Nelson told Us at the reunion. “I always assumed we’d work together again on something.”

As for Ringwald and Sheedy — the princess and the basket case — The Breakfast Club will always have a special place in their hearts. “There’s been nothing to replace it,” Ringwald said. “Until something comes along that can hold a candle to these movies, they will continue to be what they are.” As for where she thinks Claire is now? “Maybe she’s been married a few times,” she said. “Hopefully she’s happy.”

Sheedy, meanwhile, specifically related to her character. “There was an awful lot of me in Allison,” she told Us. “Allison is very close to who I was.”

The Breakfast Club’s 30th anniversary Blu-ray edition will be released on March 10.
