Ouch — that hurts! Mistress Trinity, a professional dominatrix based in Los Angeles, is speaking out against international best-seller Fifty Shades of Grey on the eve of the highly anticipated film adaptation’s release. She told HuffPost Live the book is “underwhelming” and “perpetuat[es] stereotypes” about real BDSM relationships.

Mistress Trinity, whose website mentions that she enjoys “humiliation, degradation, control and containment,” said that for readers who have never read “kink” literature before for, EL James‘ book is misleading.

“Beyond that I felt like Fifty Shades perpetuated stereotypes of men controlling women, I thought it showed BDSM as only something that men do to women and it never explores the women’s desire,” she said.

The pro said that BDSM’s emphasis on “consent” is largely ignored in the book, and innocent Anastasia is “coerced into a relationship that she didn’t necessarily want.”

“One can only consent to BDSM if they have certain qualities like self knowledge, communication, and emotional maturity, and these are the qualities that our female character just doesn’t have in the book,” Mistress Trinity told HuffPost Live. “She has no knowledge of her sexual interest because somehow she made it to her senior year of college without ever having sex, and with no sexual experience how is one supposed to communicate what they desire sexually, let alone in a BDSM context.”

Mistress Trinity said she read the book to “see what the craze was about,” but aside from the attention it brings to BDSM, she didn’t see much other merit.

“It was really painful for me to get through, to be honest, I didn’t enjoy the book,” she shared. “I probably will see the movie because I’m interested to know what the director will do.”
