So romantic! Jimmy Kimmel Live! took a surprising turn on Wednesday, Dec. 17.
Host Jimmy Kimmel chatted with the episode’s scheduled guests, Fox News’ Megyn Kelly and Golden Globe-nominated actor Michael Keaton, before welcoming an unsuspecting audience member to the stage. The funnyman, 47, told the crowd he had a surprise scavenger hunt for one lucky audience member, and appeared to select a seat at random for a participant.
After a bit of a hiccup involving an uncooperative choosing system and a misplaced spotlight, Kimmel landed on a woman from Orange County, Calif., named Sandra.
“You know, I’m full of a lot of things, but the holiday spirit tonight,” the comedian said. “I thought it would be festive and fun to play a game with prizes involved… Tonight I want to give some valuable gifts to a lucky member of our studio audience. It’s time for Hollywood Boulevard Scavenger Hunt!”
Kimmel then explained the scavenger hunt to Sandra, informing the surprise guest that she would need to collect a tree topper, a random person’s scarf, a life-size cardboard cutout of a celebrity, a license plate with her name on it, and finally, Hollywood Blvd. Elmo.
As Sandra ran out to complete the tasks, Kimmel informed the audience that the segment was not just a scavenger hunt. The woman was specifically chosen and was in for a much bigger surprise than joining the host onstage.
“This is a setup,” Kimmel spilled to the audience. “Sandra was not randomly chosen… Sandra’s boyfriend David reached out to us and asked if we could help him propose to her. Sandra thinks David is home in Orange County right now, but in fact, the guy in the Elmo costume out there, that guy, that’s him! That’s the guy that’s going to propose to her.”
