Taylor Swift shares a close encounter with ex-boyfriend John Mayer at Chateau Marmont

Dear John: That was close! Taylor Swift had a near run-in with her ex-boyfriend John Mayer, when both singer-songwriters hit Hollywood hotspot Chateau Marmont at the exact same time late Wednesday, Aug. 20.

The Grammy winners were both photographed entering and leaving the property separately — each of them in great spirits — but their timely appearances were a mere coincidence. Swift's rep tells Us Weekly: "Taylor was with Lily Aldridge and never saw Mr. Mayer at Chateau Marmont."

Mayer, 36, and Swift, 24, famously dated back in 2009, when the songstress was 19 and he was 31. Following their split, Swift penned a breakup hit for her 2010 album, Speak Now, called "Dear John," which was widely assumed to be about, ahem, John Mayer.

The lyrics, "Dear John, I see it all now it was wrong / Don't you think nineteen's too young to be played by your dark, twisted games? / When I loved you so, I should've known," alluded to the their rocky and brief romance.

In a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone, Mayer slammed Swift's song calling it "cheap songwriting." He added: "It's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'Wait til he gets a load of this!' That's bulls–t . . . It really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down."

One year later, Mayer seemingly got his revenge with his own single, "Paper Doll," which was itself widely believed to be about "22" singer Swift. "You're like 22 girls in one/ And none of them know what they're running from/ Was it just too far to fall for a little paper doll?" he croons in the song.

Mayer's most-recent relationship was with yet another singing sensation, Katy Perry, though the "Who You Love" collaborators split in March 2014. Swift, in the years following her romance with the Paradise Valley singer, dated Jake Gyllenhaal, Conor Kennedy, and One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles.

Earlier this week, she released the title of her fifth album, the pop-centric 1989, as well as "Shake It Off," its first single and music video.
