TLC, we’re still diggin’ on you! The superstar girl group that’s been topping the charts since 1990 is finally reuniting to give their fans a new album — and they’re using Kickstarter to do it! Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas shared the plans for their final album on HuffPost Live and revealed how they will let fans contribute to the recording process.
“We’ve always loved to do things that are out of the box and this [Kickstarter] is totally up our alley, like even 15 years ago when the digital thing came upon the world, we did like MP3.com,” said T-Boz, 44. “So when we heard about from the music scene, they have constantly been recording in the studio working on new music.
The group, who lost third member Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes to a tragic car accident in 2002, said despite a long hiatus from the music scene, they have constantly been recording in the studio working on new music.
“We’ve always been together… We’re two different people, we have great chemistry but she has her story, I have mine, and when we come together that chemistry is in the studio,” shared T-Boz. “We start talking about things and getting ideas for songs, and the most important thing is lyrical content — it’s so needed in the industry — that creates timeless music.”
Chilli, 43, said that the 2013 VH1 biopic, CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, that chronicled the band’s early beginnings and eventual success, led to a surplus of renewed interest in the group. This fervor inspired them to incorporate ideas from fans into the upcoming album.
“They’ve sent ideas as far as album covers, and we’ve been doing this since our FanMail album, we had names of all of our fans inside of the CD…” Chilli told HuffPost Live. “And we wanted to do that again, we were like ‘You know what, this would be a great idea.’ We really want to involve them because they want to be involved.”
TLC has set a $150,000 goal for their album, with a funding end date of Feb. 19, calling the move “out of the box” and “innovative.” The group also just announced a summer tour with New Kids on the Block, and rapper Nelly. Chilli insists that fans can expect the same “fun” from TLC that was characteristic of the group years ago.
“We stay true to ourselves… a lot of artists, they change for the industry, what you see here is what you get, that’*s it,” echoed T-Boz. “So I don’t have to put on a facade, and pretend to be a different person then when I am on stage.”
