Orange Is the New Black Star Lea DeLaria Faces Off Against Homophobic Subway Preacher: Watch

Don’t mess with Big Boo! Orange Is the New Black star Lea DeLaria showed just how much she’ll stand up for herself on Tuesday, Nov. 4, when she faced off with a subway preacher that she found offensive.

DeLaria, 56, was riding an M train in New York City when she encountered a disruptive subway preacher. While most of the passengers chose to ignore the unnamed man and his unwanted rant, the actress spoke up and faced off against him.

Wearing a black T-shirt reading “BAD JEW” and a pair of colorful pants, DeLaria raised her voice to match that of the public transportation proselytizer.

The One Life to Live alum used various strategies to fight back against the man, whom she felt was encroaching on a public space and misinterpreting the message of the Bible.

She shouted back at him, invoking teachings from the religious text, which she learned during her years of Catholic school. DeLaria went on to try a more unconventional approach, leading a rousing rendition of “99 Bottles of Beer” in an attempt to drown the preacher out.

The argument culminated in the outspoken man mentioning his negative thoughts on “the sin” of homosexuality. DeLaria, who has been openly lesbian for decades, did not take his comments lightly and ushered him out of the train car.

“No one has the right to speak at s high volume on the subway. NYC laws ban it,” she tweeted after video of the incident surfaced. “Jesus also said that men who make a show of their religion do it for themselves and not for God. ?#sermonmount?.”
