"It’s the same one I had from way back in the day," Mabrey said of her engagement ring. "I just couldn’t [get rid of it], it was too painful. I couldn’t imagine letting that go. It just meant too much, and I guess there was maybe a little bit of hope there!"

Embry is best known for his roles in Sweet Home Alabama, That Thing You Do, and Empire Records. Mabrey has spent most of her career on TV, guest starring on hit shows like Angel, Mad Men, Desperate Housewives, and The Client List. The couple, who initially married in 2005, remained in each other's lives during their split.

"She maintained a relationship with my son," Embry, 36, said of his son Cogeian. "He's 15 now, but she would hang out with him once a week you know. So she was always right there and I called her up one day and I said ‘The arms distance thing, it’s just not working.' She came and picked up my son. She drove over to pick up my son, and I came out to say hello and she’s wearing my old shirt, my favorite f–king shirt! And it’s this vintage Levis plaid number, and she had tied it at the titties."

The move, which Embry called "manipulative," made it hard for the Can't Hardly Wait actor to ignore his ex, 39.

"It has a happy ending," he said. "It wasn’t so sweet a year ago. It’s sweet now."

Mabrey agreed that things needed to be worked out before she could officially reunite with her ex.

"We grew up," she said. "I don’t know, we needed that time, obviously we did. We were just a little bit…a little mixed up. It takes a long time to realize what’s important and figure out your own issues. I just think we’d been apart for so long and the love wasn’t going away."
