’Tis the season to feel loved! Kristin Chenoweth shared some touching words via a post on her WhoSay account on Friday, Nov. 20, in honor of National Adoption Day, recounting her experience growing up with adoptive parents.

“I’ve always known that I was adopted,” she began the post. “It was never a secret or held from me.”

The Muppets star, 47, added that her parents, who adopted her just one week after she was born, always told her that she was not abandoned, but chosen.

“Growing up, my parents explained my adoption by telling me, ‘We chose you.’ It was a wonderful way to put it to an adopted child. And I think it’s true. An adoption is a full-circle blessing.”

Chenoweth added that she holds no ill-will against her birth mother, whom she’s never met, because the actress understands that her mother loved her so much that she wanted to give her baby a better life.

“Sometimes people can’t take care of that baby just yet. (And their circumstances might change in 15 years),” the actress explained. “But what a gift they are giving to both that child and the family who wants to adopt.”

Chenoweth then addressed other adopted children, encouraging them to remember what a “blessing” it was to be in their situation.

“We weren’t abandoned; we were chosen,” she wrote. “We were given a chance. I’m not saying it’s not hard or that it’s easy for people to understand. But it really isn’t for the world to understand; it’s for the people who are involved.”

The actress shared several photos of herself with her adoptive parents, Jerry and Junie Chenoweth, and expressed her thanks.

“People always ask me: ‘Have you ever wanted to find your parents?’” she wrote. “I have discovered a little bit about my biological parents and each piece of information helps me, but ultimately I tell people: ‘I have my parents.’”
