From the recycling bin to the red carpet! Emma Watson attended the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala 2016 on Monday, May 2, in NYC, wearing a black-and-white ensemble crafted entirely from recycled plastic bottles.
In collaboration with Eco-Age, the organization that spearheaded the Green Carpet Challenge for sustainable fashion, Calvin Klein Collection created an off-the-shoulder bustier, wide-leg tailored pants and a long detachable train for the Harry Potter alum, 26. All of it was made using one of three materials: sustainable cotton, satin or taffeta, each of which were woven from yarn made from plastic bottles.

“Plastic is one of the biggest pollutants – being able to turn this waste into a high quality material is a real success story,” the Beauty and the Beast actress’ stylist, Sarah Slutsky, wrote via Instagram.

And while most Met Gala dresses will never be seen on a red carpet again, that’s not the case with Watson’s ensemble. “This beautiful look was designed with the intention to be repurposed for future use; the pants can be worn on their own, the train can be used for another red carpet — the ultimate #30Wears!” Slutsky added.

Watson is no stranger to the promotion of eco-friendly style. During her Regression promo tour in 2015, she chose each of her looks based on the label’s commitment to creating ethical and sustainable fashion. The Brown University alum also spent her gap year (2009) designing a capsule collection for People Tree, a fair trade fashion brand. Proceeds went to the label’s foundation, which schools artisans on green style initiatives.
